BPMN 2.0 Handbook. Methods, Concepts, Case Studies and Standards in Business Process Management Notation. Bruce Silver. Published in. Specification or not easy to read and understand, or both. In BPMN Method & Style, Bruce Silver has written a very practical book that bridges the gap between.
My BPMN Method and Style course is the world leader in BPMN training and certification. Since it began in 2007, we have trained thousands of business analysts, business architects, BPM consultants, and process engineers around the globe in the right way to do process modeling, and have passed our rigorous certification.
Today the training is offered in a variety of delivery formats and on a choice of BPMN tools, all following the same Method and Style approach. Method and Style does more than teach the vocabulary of BPMN – the meaning of the shapes and symbols. It also provides a methodology for creating consistently well-structured models that are clear, complete, and shareable between business and IT, and teaches important elements of BPMN style that ensure the process logic is communicated unambiguously from the diagram on its own. The approach is described in detail in my book, the most popular BPMN 2.0 book on the market, and the training shows you how to put it into practice. The primary purpose of BPMN is to communicate process logic clearly through the diagram.
While it can be used as a sort of XML programming language, that is not really what it is about. We teach students the diagram elements they need in practice, and how to use and label them correctly. The complete element set of BPMN 2.0 includes too many task, gateway, and event types, and only about half of them are ever used. And we show you how to create models that are structurally correct. Core concepts like activity and process have a very specific meaning in BPMN, but that meaning is not clearly explained in the spec, often leading to models containing fundamental structure errors. Learning to create “good BPMN” – models that communicate the process logic clearly, correctly, and consistently through the diagram – does not require technical knowledge, just a disciplined approach and attention to detail. Just as with any language, you can’t learn to “speak” it properly by reading a book.
You need to be hands-on with a tool. We have exercises throughout the training, and a major mail-in exercise in the post-class certification period.

The tools we use in the training – Process Modeler for Visio from, an add-in to Microsoft Visio,, and, cloud-based tools accessed through a web browser – all incorporate Method and Style validation. Without this, my personal review of the certification exercises would be impossible. Actually, the certification process is where the classroom teaching really begins to sink in. The training is offered in a variety of formats or delivery channels. The course content, exercises, and post-class certification is the same regardless of the format.
•, available worldwide in English. The base price includes training and certification for up to 15 students at the client’s site. Client may specify any of the 3 tools. Live training may include an optional post-class workshop focused on the client’s actual process models in development. •, approximately bimonthly.
Most classes run 11am-4pm each day US Eastern Time (5-10pm CET). Students have a choice of tools. Distributed groups of 10 or more may request private live-online training with date/time and tool specified by the client. Students view the training through the iLinc e-learning environment and perform in-class exercises in another window. •, self-paced. We now have two versions of the training.
The content and certification requirements are identical. The first version uses the new ViziModeler tool from itp-commerce, an add-in to Microsoft Visio. Click to register for this version. The second uses the Trisotech BPMN Modeler, which is cloud/browser-based. Click to register for this version.
Creating business process models that can be shared effectively across the business - and between business and IT - demands more than a digest of BPMN shapes and symbols. It requires a step-by-step methodology for going from a blank page to a complete process diagram. It also requires consistent application of a modeling style, so that the modeler's meaning is clear from the diagram itself. Author Bruce Silver explains not only the meaning and proper usage of the entire BPMN 2.0 palette, but calls out the working subset that you really need to know. He also reveals the hidden assumptions of core concepts left unexplained in the spec, the key to BPMN's deeper meaning. The book addresses BPMN at three levels, with primary focus on the first two.
